Pop hits with Latino influences are de rigueur now – and no one has had a greater impact on this state of affairs than Cuban-Americans Gloria and Emilio Estefan, now recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom
President Obama presents the Presidential Medal Of Freedom award to Emilio and Gloria Estefan.
On Tuesday, Barack Obama presented Gloria Estefan and her husband and longtime collaborator, Emilio, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom – the highest honour that can be given to a United States civilian. “As proud Cuban-Americans, they’ve promoted their cultural heritage and inspired fans all over the world,” Obama said while presenting the couple with the award.
Pop megahits with Latino influences are de rigueur on American radio now, as anyone who’s heard a song featuring the ever-dapper Cuban-American MC Pitbull can tell you. The Estefans’ rise to pop prominence, which began in earnest when Conga hit it big in 1985, had a massive impact on that state of affairs.
Music that originated in the Latin American community had a small, but significant, presence on pop radio during that format’s mid-80s renaissance. Latin freestyle, the treble-heavy dance music with lyrics that unfolded like mini-telenovelas, maintained a presence on pop radio in cities like New York and Miami; the New York singer Lisa Lisa and the Florida-born emoter Stevie B crossed over to pop more widely; artists like Madonna worked with prominent producers in the genre like John “Jellybean” Benitez. The Puerto Rican boy bandMenudo had a minor MTV hit with Hold Me, a bubbly, infatuated track recorded while future crossover star Ricky Martin was a member.
But Estefan and her band, Miami Sound Machine, were the biggest crossover act of the decade, with a constant stream of hits that paid explicit homage to her Cuban heritage.
“People told us to change our sound, and change our name, and that there was no way a Hispanic group could cross over like that,” Gloria Estefan said to the Miami news outlet Local 10 on Tuesday.
Gloria Estefan’s journey to becoming one of the biggest Latin American pop stars began in 1959, when her family fled Cuba for Miami. She met Emilio Estefan in 1975; the two married in 1978, and shortly after that Emilio’s band, the Miami Latin Boys, changed their name to Miami Sound Machine.
Miami Sound Machine’s first English-language album, Eyes of Innocence, came out in 1984 and experienced a soft landing in the marketplace. But the follow-up,Primitive Love, became a huge hit thanks to its first single, the bouncy, jittery Conga. Its fiery brass blasts and cavernous percussion made it ripe for crossover, and it peaked at No 10 on the Hot 100. The follow-up, the gently swinging Bad Boy, showed off Estefan’s flirtatious side; Words Get in the Way, a richly realized ballad written by Estefan, topped the adult-contemporary charts in 1986.
Miami Sound Machine continued to mint hits during the late 80s, and Estefan took center stage with Cuts Both Ways in 1989. Get On Your Feet, from that album, melded the dance-commander rhythms of Conga with synthpop, a savvy harnessing of trends that kept Estefan as a presence on the radio.
In March 1990 she was in a bus accident that resulted in her having to have steel rods implanted in her back. But her recovery – commemorated by the gospel-tinged 1991 single Coming Out of the Dark – led to her doubling down not just on her music, but on her extramusical works. In 1992 she served as a delegate to the United Nations general assembly; in 1994 she helped the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis raise more than $40m for a new building. The Estefans are also partners in the Miami Dolphins alongside tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams.
Gloria Estefan is still making music; in September she, along with storied guitarist Carlos Santana and other Latino musicians, recorded We’re All Mexican, an Emilio-produced rebuke to the anti-Mexican tirades offered up by former reality TV star turned political firebrand Donald Trump. But the Estefans’ reshaping of the pop charts is still felt today, and goes far beyond the music they make themselves – not only did the success of Conga and its follow-up singles open the door for artists celebrating their Latin heritage, Emilio Estefan’s shrewd mentoring of future superstars like Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez helped them crack the finicky American market.
In the early 2000s, he managed Colombian singer Shakira, who had sold boatloads of Spanish-language records. Gloria decided that she was ready to cross over to an American audience. “Some artists have never done it – they’ve stayed in Spanish, even though they may have been able to cross over,” Estefan told Oprah Winfrey in 2013. “I showed her she could do it, and boom.”
Estefan wanted to do it right, respecting Shakira’s lyrical ability while targeting the American audience with pinpoint precision.
“They wanted her just to throw a couple of songs in English on a Latin record, and I fought hard,” Estefan recalled. “I said, ‘Listen. You can’t do it halfway. An American audience is not going to get a record that is mostly Spanish.’”
The result was Laundry Service, Shakira’s blockbuster 2001 album that included megahits like the shimmying Whenever, Wherever and the sexy Underneath Your Clothes.
“I fought hard for her, and she sold, like, 13m of that album,” Estefan said.
The Estefans’ story – which involves a fair amount of fight – is now on Broadway in the musical On Your Feet!, which opened earlier this month. (It climaxes with, yes, a conga line.) But the stories sparked by not just their music, but by their business savvy, will continue to be told for years.

How Barcelona's annoyingly catchy club song may have cost Shakira her next number one

The Colombian singer knows the Nou Camp well through husband Gerard Pique, but there are downsides it seems

If you've watched a Barcelona game in recent years, then you'll be familiar with the club hymn, the Cant del Barca.
And if you're not, then just play the video below and realise that you do remember it after all.
It is the sort of tune that you find yourself humming for hours after as you try to work out where on earth it is from - and it's that earworm tendency that could have cost Shakira her next number one!

The Colombian songstress, who is married to Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique, is one of the most successful artists on the planet. But not even she could avoid the deadly combo of the catchy hymn, an excitable child and a car journey.
"The last time I tried to write a new song I was in the car with [eldest son] Milan. A new tune came to me, but he was just singing the Barcelona hymn as loud as he could. I had to try and remember the melody for when I got home, but when I sat down in the studio that inspiration had completely gone," she told Argentine newspaper Clarín.
Gerard Pique and Shakira pose with the trophy after FC Barcelona won the Copa del Rey Final match against Athletic Bilbao
Such is life for a businesswoman worth an estimated quarter of a billion dollars - but she says she's happy enough for now just to have the family she's always wanted.
"Making music and bringing up my kids at the same time is a problem, but I won't complain. I always wanted to have a family, and now I just have to find time and balance."

Shakira Wants Sasha To Become Gerard Pique, Barcelona Player Wants One More Baby Boy?

Shakira
Shakira may be egging on her baby boy Sasha to grow up to become like his daddy Gerard Pique. Seeing the latest Instagram video from “Waka Waka” singer, it looks like Sasha may have future in football!
According to People, “If you need any more proof that Shakira‘s kids are soccer stars in training, just watch this adorable video she shared of 6-month-old son Sasha dribbling a soccer ball. “Happy 6 months Sasha!” the singer, 38, captioned the cute footage.”
Sasha’s football career aside, recently Shakira and Gerard Pique finally purchased their new family house in Barcelona near Neymar.
According to Sports English, “This time they have chosen the city of Barcelona and a house situated on Avenida Pearson. It's a house surrounded by trees, preserving its intimacy.”
Rolling Stone cover artist is treating Gerard Pique and her baby boy Milan and Sasha on a luxurious summer vacation. Seeing how busy “Waka Waka” singer and the Barcelona player is, this summer family time must be precious for everyone.
Maybe the fact that they celebrated baby boy Sasha turning five months in June prompted them to spend more time as a family.
Shakira and Gerard Pique gave their second baby boy Sasha a big shoutout on Twitter to celebrate the boy’s five-month birthday. It looks like “Waka Waka” singer and Barcelona player are getting more and more energy from their baby boys!
According to Hello Magazine, “To celebrate [Sasha’s] mini milestone, the doting mum has shared a gorgeous photo collage on Instagram. The singer welcomed little Sasha, her second son with partner Gerard Piqué, on 29 January.”
Shakira and Gerard Pique believe that they have the “cutest family” and they weren’t afraid of showing it off on Twitter. ‘Waka Waka’ singer and the Barcelona player certainly have been adjusting well to their priorities changing with two baby boys in their lives.
Do you think Rolling Stone cover artist will think about having another baby after her two sons Milan and Sasha? Do you think she will have another baby boy with the Barcelona player? Let me know in the comments below!

Meet the voice behind Calvin Harris’s new hit

Who the hell is singing Calvin Harris’ new hit single, “How Deep Is Your Love”? The cover lists only Harris and all-male production trio Disciples — yet it’s definitely a woman’s voice.
Turns out her name is Ina Wroldsen. And not only does she warble the entire song, but she co-wrote it.
Reached in Los Angeles, the 31-year-old, London-based Norwegian is philosophical about it all.
“You’ve gotta pick your battles,” she says. “I’m a writer first, and in cases like this you put your emotions aside. I wrote that song with Disciples about 18 months ago. Calvin heard it, loved it and wanted to put it out as his own single.”
So he did, keeping Wroldsen’s demo vocals.
“I had the idea in the car,” she recalls, “and the [Disciples] boys were like, ‘Let’s write house!’ I said I didn’t know how to do that and they were like, ‘Just try.’ So we wrote the song and I sang it — what you hear is literally one take.”
Uncredited singers aren’t new in house and techno: Martha Wash had to sue to be acknowledged as the pipes behind hits like “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” by C+C Music Factory and “Everybody Everybody” by Black Box. More recently, you had to dig to learn that Aloe Blacc sings Avicii’s “Wake Me Up.” And Wroldsen points out the trend may be spreading from EDM to pop.
Still, this songwriter-for-hire — she’s cranked out tunes for everybody from the Pussycat Dolls to One Direction to Shakira — remains unfazed. Asked about the rumor that it’s her we hear on the 2011 Britney Spears track “He About to Lose Me,” Wroldsen just laughs.
“It’s a lot of me in that chorus,” she admits. “To be honest I wish it was a little less of me, but it is what it is. I thought she did a great job.”
Spoken like a pro.
Maybe Wroldsen keeps calm because she performs her own material both in the band Ask Embla and solo — the songs sound more typical of someone who lists Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos and Fiona Apple as favorites.
“I think of myself as a musical schizo,” Wroldsen says. “I’ve always felt there were two writers in me: Ina who writes for Ina and Ina who writes for everyone else.” She pauses. “As a songwriter that’s my biggest advantage. As an artist that’s probably my biggest holdback.”
Maybe not for long — leading two careers hasn’t hurt Sia.

Shakira and Pique May Have Another Athlete in the Family

Shakira and pro soccer player Gerard Pique may have another athlete in the family.
On Wednesday, Shakira, 38, posted a video to Twitter and Facebook of the couple's youngest child, Sasha, who was born in January, in which she appears holding her son in front of a soccer ball.
"Kick," the Colombian star says repeatedly to the baby boy, who raises his leg and succeeds on the first try.
The 12-second video racked up nearly 2 million views on Facebook in an hour.
The couple's first child, Milan, a boy, was born in January 2013.
Shakira, who also is a coach on NBC's "The Voice," last year launched a line of baby toys and a Web series for moms.

Piqué and Shakira splash out on mansion

Piqué and Shakira splash out on mansion
Gerard Piqué and Shakira have splashed out €5 million on a mansion in Barcelona's plush Pedralbes neighbourhood. The huge house covers 1,500 square metres and is equipped with every conceivable comfort and a high degree of privacy.
According to Coldwell Banker Prestige Barcelona, the estate agent which managed the sale of the property, Shakira and Piqué had been interested in the luxurious digs for several years, but the sale did not go through until a few weeks ago at a price of €5 million.
The couple's new home is located on Pearson Avenue in the Pedralbes neighbourhood, although the house cannot be seen from the road because it is surrounded by trees and gardens. According to the agents, however, these do not block out the spectacular views of the Catalan capital.
The building comprises three storeys with a floor space of 1,500 square metres, featuring seven bedrooms, two kitchens, a swimming pool complete with a waterfall, a gym and many other comforts.
According to François Carriere, the head of Coldwell Banker in Spain, "It is a great buy for the new occupants because it is one of the best houses in the city". Carriere adds that "the sale was able to go through very quickly and below the market value given the seller's interest in securing a rapid sale".
Coldwell Banker Prestige Barcelona also recently managed the sale of the mansion which belonged to Princess Cristina and Iñaki Urdangarin, located nearby the house which Piqué and Shakira have just purchased.

Shakira Lands Dream Barcelona Home for Discounted Price

LOS ANGELES: Pop superstar Shakira has finally landed her dream home in Barcelona, Spain for less than half the original asking price.
The "Waka Waka" hitmaker and her soccer star partner, Gerard Pique, first expressed an interest in purchasing the property on Avenida de Pearson in 2014, but they were not happy with the USD 11.9 million price tag and passed on the pad, reported Fox News.
However, the house reportedly failed to sell and in May, Shakira and Pique made another attempt to buy the mansion for around USD 5.4 million and that offer was accepted.
The couple has been working on renovations on the property ever since.
Pique won't be the only Barcelona FC star in the neighbourhood when he and his family eventually move in - his Brazilian teammate, Neymar, also lives in the area.

Kurdish 'Shakira' Helly Luv rocks anti-Daesh anthems

Helly Luv's unuqiue blend of bang and bling

High heels, fatigues and gold rifle-shaped rings -- singer Helly Luv's blend of bang and bling has made her the most popular cheerleader for the Iraqi Kurds' war against Daesh (IS).

She visits peshmerga forces fighting the IS group, which overran a third of Iraq last year, and says she filmed her latest music video in Al Khazr, not far from the Daesh lines.

"I want to give something to the peshmerga because I consider myself one of them," the 26-year-old singer told AFP in the Kurdish regional capital Arbil.

"I wore peshmerga clothes in the song to support them."

Her latest music video, for a song titled ‘Revolution’, opens with a peshmerga fighter looking at a picture of himself with a young boy, presumably his son, as shelling and gunfire are heard in the background.

He tucks the photo inside his helmet and goes to fight.

The video then moves to a quiet village where children play and people sit drinking tea, but it soon comes under fire from black-clad militants driving armoured vehicles like those captured from Iraqi security forces, including a tank.

A child screams and residents flee, but Helly Luv -- wearing golden high heels with a white and red scarf covering her face -- strides the other way to dramatic music, unfurling a banner before the tank that reads "STOP THE VIOLENCE."

She sings and dances next to a car with "END WAR" spray painted on its side, but footage that includes peshmerga forces counterattacking and lyrics such as "We gon' keep on fighting" make clear she means the violence will stop once IS is defeated.

The music video hits on many themes that the peshmerga have sought to emphasise since the anti- Daesh conflict began last June, showing them as the brave, secular defenders of the innocent threatened by jihadist brutality.

'Kurdish Shakira'

The video and English lyrics are over the top and sometimes cringe-worthy, but also apparently popular, garnering 700,000 views on YouTube barely two weeks after its release.

"The song is called 'Revolution' and I call in it for Kurdistan and the countries of the world to unite to fight terrorism and injustice," Helly Luv said.

"I want to show the world who the peshmerga forces are, and who Daesh is," she said, using an Arabic acronym that the jihadist group deems derogatory.

Peshmerga officer Nawzad Saleh, said that in the days when the peshmerga were mountain-based rebel fighters, singers sang songs encouraging them to fight.

"Now the Kurdish singers have begun singing for the peshmerga in other languages, and this is a beautiful step and will result in the world knowing more about who the peshmerga are," he said.

Peshmerga fighter Abdulrahman Ahmed agreed, saying such songs will encourage "the international community to sympathise and cooperate with us more, and support us with weapons to continue fighting these terrorists and eliminate them once and for all."

According to her online biography, Helly Luv was born Helan Abdulla in Iran in 1988 and her grandfather fought for the peshmerga.

Her family had fled Saddam Hussein's rule and she grew up mainly in Finland before flying to Los Angeles when she turned 18 to pursue a career in music.

With plenty of hip-swinging and hair-swishing, the rock-chick style of the ‘Kurdish Shakira’ is in stark contrast with the sombre and pious "nasheeds" -- both for and against IS -- that have blossomed on social media over the past year.

Of filming in Al-Khazr, Helly Luv said: "There were some who warned me against going there, but I insisted that filming be in real places affected by Daesh terrorism." Agencies

Shakira shares five-month old son's cute photos on Instagram

Call it a fad or a publicity stunt, the fact is that it is one failproof way to grab eyeballs. Millions of them, in fact. The latest in a string of celebs posting intimate pictures of their family on social networking sites is singer Shakira. The Hips Don't Lie star posted a photo collage of her five-month-old son, Sasha, on Instagram on Thursday.
Born on January 29 this year, Sasha is Shakira’s second son with partner Gerard Piqué.
The photos show the baby in different moods – he looks grumpy in one while smiling in another. It is evident someone is holding the baby, possibly his footballer dad Gerard Piqué.
The pictures were captioned in both Spanish and English: Felices 5 meses Sasha! / Happy 5 months Sasha! Shak.

Shakira and Gerard met in 2010 when the singer was preparing a music video for the world famous Waka Waka track that was used as the official song for the FIFA World Cup that year. The duo's first baby Milan was born in January 2013 in Barcelona in Spain, where the family is based.

Latin American Celebrities Blast Donald Trump Over Racism

Colombia’s most famous singer Shakira also joined the conversation on social media, rallying her 100 million followers behind her stance against Trump.

Shakira, Ricky Martin and Eva Longoria are among the stars taking Trump to task over his inflammatory remarks about Mexican immigrants. If Donald Trump’s recent anti-Latino rhetoric was an attempt at gaining electoral ground among U.S. conservatives, the backlash appears to have united the country’s large and diverse Latino population against the billionaire-turned-politician. Weeks after Trump labeled U.S.-Mexican immigrants as rapists and criminals, Latino leaders and artists in the United States are standing up to the “the Donald.” “You've said some pretty offensive things about Latino immigrants recently,” U.S.- Honduran actress America Ferrera wrote in a letter addressed to the Republican presidential candidate published in the Huffington Post. “I'm writing to say thank you! Remarks like yours will serve brilliantly to energize Latino voters and increase turnout on election day against you and any other candidate who runs on a platform of hateful rhetoric,” added the ‘Ugly Betty’ star. Gina Rodriguez, the rising star of the TV series “Jane the Virgin,” praised Ferrera’s letter, saying in Instagram post that “your words of truth and optimism on a terrible situation can move a community to show their power!” Colombia’s most famous singer Shakira also chimed in through social media, rallying her 100 million followers behind her stance against Trump.

Shakira condemns Donald Trump for racist speech

Columbian pop star Shakira isn't happy with Donald Trump, and is the latest celebrity to accuse him of using "hateful and racist speech"when discussing immigration.
Republican presidential candidate Trump has been roundly criticised for appearing to accuse Mexican immigrants of increasing drug crimes and rapes within US borders.
Now, Shakira, 38, has joined the likes of Neil Young, Cher and Bill Maher in condemning Trump's offensive comments on her Twitter account.
"This is a hateful and racist speech that attempts to divide a country that for years has promoted diversity and democracy! No one living in this century should stand behind so much ignorance," Shakira tweeted.

Shakira is the tenth studio album by Colombian singer Shakira, released on March 21, 2014 by RCA Records. It is her first English-language album since her eighth studio album, She Wolf (2009). Shakira revealed in November 2011 that she had begun work on the album, which continued into 2014. The album was initially set to be released in 2012, but was delayed because of Shakira's pregnancy. Since starting the album, Shakira departed Epic Records, signed a new management deal with Roc Nation and subsequently signed to Epic's sister label, RCA Records.
pop album, Shakira has a diverse musical style that incorporates a range of genres such as reggae and rock, as well as dance andcountry elements.[1] Its production is characterized by lean, tender verses and muscular, ecstatic choruses, that incorporate swirling, crashing sounds. The album's lyrics explore motherhood, the complexities of romantic relationships, stages of love and the search for personal happiness. Most of the album was written by Shakira, along with Nasri and Adam Messinger, with all the previous predominantly producing the album.
Upon release Shakira was met with positive reviews from music critics, praising its lyrical content, while others stated that Shakira was trying to "Americanize her sound". Commercially the album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart with first week sales of 85,000 copies. By doing so, Shakira became the singer's highest-charting album on the chart, although it also achieved her lowest first-week sales figure (for an English-language album). The album campaign started in 2014, with the release of its first single, "Can't Remember to Forget You", followed by the singles "Empire" and "Dare (La La La)".

Background[edit]

In October 2010, Shakira released her ninth studio album, Sale el Sol. The record marked a return to her musical roots after her experimentation with electronic music and was primarily a Latin pop album with influences of rock and merengue music.[2][3] It garnered critical acclaim[4] and was a commercial success internationally.[5] A year later in November, Shakira revealed in an interview with Billboard magazine that she had begun writing new material and working with various producers for a new record.[6] The following year, she ended her recording contract with Epic Records and signed under Roc Nation for management purposes.[7] In December 2013, it was announced that Shakira had signed a recording contract with RCA Records, under which the record would be released.[8]

Recording[edit]

"I already started to write new material. I've begun to explore in the recording studio whenever I have time in Barcelona and here in Miami. I'm working with different producers and DJs, and I try to feed off from that and find new sources of inspiration and new musical motivation. I'm anxious to return to the studio. My body is asking for it."
 — Shakira describing the artistic transition she experienced during the production of Shakira.[6]
In November 2011, Shakira said about her tenth album: "I already started to write new material. I've begun to explore in the recording studio whenever I have time in Barcelona and here in Miami. I'm working with different producers and DJs, and I try to feed off from that and find new sources of inspiration and new musical motivation. I'm anxious to return to the studio. My body is asking for it".[6] In February 2012, Shakira revealed a picture of herself, LMFAO and Akon working in the studio together, it was also revealed she was working with other producers such as Benny BlancoTiëstoRedOneMax MartinDr. Luke.[9] The following month, Shakira took to Twitter to revel she has been working with American singer and songwriter Ester Dean, as well as working with other producers including Fernando GaribaySia.[10] The same month it was revealed once again via Twitter Shakira had been working with The RunnersThe DreamShea Taylor and Billboard.[11]
Blake SheltonRihanna and Magic! are all known to make guest appearances on the album.[12] On September 1, 2013, Shakira gave an update on her album, stating: "Amazing day in the studio! 2 years and I finally feel in these songs as comfortable as [I do] in my torn jeans!".[13] In November, she confirmed via her official Facebook that she was writing the final lyrics for the record.[14] In January 2014, Shakira spoke on the album's recording and production, saying that she was "so happy" to be sharing her album "with you all", Shakira continued to speak about the album; saying it was something she had "been working on for over two years now." In the same interview Shakira elaborated saying "The work on this album has spanned a very eventful time, with many ups and downs but ultimately, the happiest period in my life thus far, including the birth of my son. I've explored many different directions, worked with many different people, and written many, many demos before arriving at the finished product I will soon be presenting to you."[15] In January 2014, Shakira released a statement through her Facebook regarding the album's recording process:
"In the end, what I realized is that throughout the course of creating this body of work, I learned a lot about myself. Though I didn't realize it at the time, all the directions I began exploring in the initial phases of recording were helping to pave a path for me of rediscovery. In the end I realized that I will always be a little bit of everything and I don't have to choose, I am sometimes extremely sensitive, sometimes upbeat, others dreamy and romantic, and even at times a little melodramatic. (Call it the Caribbean blood.) But always authentic and always sincere. Most importantly, I am enough., imperfections and all. So what I am offering you now is just that."[16]

Music and lyrics[edit]

"I realized that it's not exactly a thematic album, though love is and always has been one of my main subjects and sources for inspiration. It's also not necessarily conceptual, as some of my albums have been in the past"
 — Shakira describing the album's musical themes.[15]
Musically the album was described as an "uneasy bargain" between a "rootsy, often acoustic-based pop with a rangy feel and an affinity for early Alanis Morissette" that Shakira wanted and the producers' desire for hits.[17] Emily Mackay of Digitalsy characterised the album as being a "fine balance" between Shakira's style and "what's best about" her and trying to stay relevant in the music industries rat race.[18] When first announcing the record, Shakira described its sound as being "a little bit ofrock, a little bit of folk, a little reggae and naturally some dance."[19] On "Shakira,", she blends an "array" of musical influences and flavors that follow in the same vein as previous albums. Mixing a variety of genres including "dance-pop, Spanish, reggae and rock," the album lyrically talks about how she loves, both in her relationship and as a mother.[20]
Mike Wass from Idolator described Shakira as being a blend of experimental "poetic pop" songs that take influence from a range of genres including reggae, dance, rock and country.[1] Kevin Harley of the Independent described the album's musical content as being built upon "reggae-tinged, bouncy melodies," and noted the album's lyrics as being "absurd" and "occasionally quite poetic."[21] Lyrically the album focus on topics including love and motherhood, whilst the album's music was described by Leila Cobo from Billboard as being "cohesive" with an "organic set" that's roots "lie mostly in melodic pop-rock and unexpected touches from multiple influences."[22] Shakira is built on "lean, tender" verses and "muscular, ecstatic" choruses, and incorporate "swirling, crashing" sounds noted on "Spotlight". Throughout the album Shakira sings about searching for "realization of personal happiness," which was noted as a "recurring topic".[23]
According to James Reed of The Boston GlobeShakira is the singer's most "personal effort in years", Reed continued to praise Shakira and the album's lyrical content which he described, saying "She sounds at ease and reborn on this new album, proudly addressing the joy of new love from both her child and partner."[24] Leila Cobo from Billboard noted the change in the album's lyrical and musical style to that of She Wolf (2009), Cobo said "Instead, get ready for a set of convincing, honest music, on which the Colombian star often unabashedly professes her love for boyfriend Gerard Pique. Perhaps love is what makes this album soar."[22]

The album opens with "Dare (La La La)", the song an uptempo dance track that contains Brazilian beats and takes influence from electronica, with a Spanish version of the song also recorded for the album.[22][25] The following track, "Can't Remember to Forget You", is an uptempo new wave and reggae rock[26] track that incorporates elements of ska.[27] The song opens with a "low-slung, reggae-tinged verse" before moving into a "guitar-heavy" chorus which contains "ska guitars and horns" and a "chunky rock arrangement".[28][29][30] Lyrically, the song concerns a man that Shakira can not get off her mind, discussing how easy it is to forget how bad someone is for you when you still love them.[27][28] "Empire" is a mid-tempo rock-influenced song, described as being Shakira's biggest rock transition in a long time since her earlier music.[31] The song begins with an acoustic "sparse" intro and builds up to an anthemic rock tune.[31] Lyrically, the track talks about a bursting passion that the singer simply cannot express in words.[32]
The track "You Don't Care About Me" is a bruised and moody midtempo Latin pop song.[17][33] The song contains "syncopated beats" and a "slightly retro 60s sound", that lyrically discusses "spite".[22] "Cut Me Deep", a colloboration between Shakira and MAGIC!, is a reggae-pop song.[33] The song is built over a reggae beat, steel drums and horns pick and contain a mixture of ska and rock.[22] The following track "Spotlight" is a pop rock song that and has been compared to the work of Katy Perry and Carly Rae Jepsen.[1][33]"Spotlight" takes influence from heavy rock tracks, with power guitars that lyrically delivers a "crushing message".[22] "Broken Record" is a love song that follows in the vein as "Empire", the song contains a guitar, before breaking into a power ballad with "grandiose strings".[22] "Medicine" that features Blake Shelton is a country pop ballad, with lyrics such as: "I won't reach for the bottle of whisky/ You won't see me popping the pills.[33] The song "23", is heavily inspired by her boyfriend Gerard Piqué, is a melodic pop rock song with lyrics as; "Hey, do you believe in destiny? 'Cause I do as I did then, when you were only 23."[25]
"The One Thing" is a guitar based pop song that features hand-claps and foot-stomps and takes influence from Shakira's son and motherhood.[1][25] "Loca Por Ti" is a Catalan song (originally by Sau) that pays "homage" to Pique. The Catalan version "Boig per Tu" is available on the Spanish deluxe edition of the album.[25] "Chasing Shadows" is the second of three bonus tracks, an electropop song built over "soaring synths".[1] Lyrically, the song is a "musical love letter:" "It's just you and me and we chase our shadows, just waiting for the sun to go down."[1] "La La La (Brazil 2014)" is included on the Latin American and Spanish deluxe edition of the album; it is a re-worked version of the song "Dare (La La La)" with new lyrics for the 2014 World Cup.[34]

Singles[edit]

"Can't Remember to Forget You" served as the lead single from Shakira. The song was released on January 13, 2014, and features Barbadian recording artist Rihanna.[35] The song was met with positive reviews from critics who praised the singers' chemistry.[36] It entered at number 28 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, becoming her highest-debuting track in the United States.[37] Its highest Billboard Hot 100 chart position so far is at number fifteen. As of March 2014, the song has sold 376,000 digital copies in the US.[38] Its accompanying music video was directed by Joseph Kahn,[39] and was premiered through Vevo on January 30.[40] A solo Spanish-language version of the song, titled "Nunca Me Acuerdo de Olvidarte", was released on January 21.[41]
"Empire", which was released on February 24, 2014 alongside the album's iTunes pre-order, and served as the album's second Top 40/mainstream single in the US and the UK. It oficially impacted Hot Adult Contemporary radio in the U.S. on April 22, 2014.[42] Additionally, it was released in the UK on May 5, 2014.[43][44][45] "Empire" was critically acclaimed, with most critics praising the singer for returning to her rock roots.[46] Commercially "Empire" debuted at number 29 on the PROMUSICAE chart, while in France, the song managed to debut at number 82.[47][48]
"Dare (La La La)" serves as the third single. The song was first released to contemporary hit radio in Italy on March 28, 2014.[49][50] Only in May 12, 2014 the song was officially released worldwide with extended play remixed by Chuckie and Chus & Ceballos.[51]

Release and promotion[edit]

In December 2012, it was reported that Shakira would release a track, named "Truth or Dare" by fans, as the lead single from her record;[52] an accompanying music video was reportedly filmed in Lisbon earlier that year.[53] However, after becoming pregnant by footballer Gerard Piqué, said plans were indefinitely postponed, and never came to fruition.[52] The song was later included on the final tracklisting of the album, the real name being "Dare (La La La)". In October 2013, Peter Edge from RCA Records announced intentions to premiere an "event single" by Shakira by the end of the year, although this release never occurred.[54] On December 6, 2013, a Twitter page named @ShakiraSpace announced the duet between Shakira and Rihanna. Then, on December 8, 2013, Shakira's body double Alexita Ortiz wrote on social networking site Twitter that she had been working with her on the set for a music video, and mentioned that Rihanna was also involved.[55] The tweet was subsequently removed.[55] Later, Sony Music Entertainmentannounced that the first single would be released in early 2014.[56]
On January 22, 2014, Shakira announced that the album would be titled Shakira. She elaborated that during the recording process she realized that it was neither "thematic" or "conceptual" as she felt her earlier projects were, instead opining that its production "[helped] to pave a path for me of rediscovery." It was additionally announced that the record would be released on March 25, 2014 in the United States.[19] Shakira later revealed that a Target-exclusive deluxe version of the record would be made available for pre-orderon January 26. Its cover artwork was revealed two days earlier, and sees Shakira dressed in a sheer cardigan and bra while holding a red guitar.[57] The cover for the standard version was revealed on February 14; it features the same image, although the guitar is brown instead of red.[58]
On March 25, 2014, Shakira held an iHeartRadio album release party which was presented by Target and hosted by Ryan Seacrest, live from the iHeartRadio Theater Los Angeles. During the release party Shakira performed four songs from the album; "Empire", "Can't Remember to Forget You", "You Don't Care About Me" and "23".[59] The following day Shakira performed the song "Empire", during a promotional interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[60] The same day Shakira performed "Hips Don't Lie", "Empire" and "Can't Remember to Forget You" during a live set on The Today Show at the Rockerfella stadium.[61] On March 28, 2014, Shakira performed the album's lead single "Can't Remember to Forget You" at the German music award show Echo.[62] On March 29, 2014, Shakira performed "Empire" on the British version of The Voice.[63]

Commercial performance[edit]

Shakira entered the UK Albums Chart at number fourteen.[64] The album also entered the Argentine's weekly chart at number 6 [65]
Upon release in the United States, the album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart with first week sales of 85,000 copies, and in doing so became the singer's highest-charting album on the chart, surpassing the number three peak of Laundry Service (2001), but her lowest first-week sales of her English albums. This sales figure was slightly better than initially predicted in the US for Shakira, which was initially expected to sell 75,000 to 80,000 copies in its first week.[66]
In 2015 the album has sold over 3,000,000 copies worldwide.
